Plain answers before you call

Who can use the clinic?

People on low or modest incomes who were harmed by police, a jail or prison, a public office, or a business open to the public, and who live in or near Memphis.

What does it cost?

Nothing to a client who qualifies, for our work. Court filing fees, records and experts can cost money. We ask courts to waive what they can and tell you in writing before you owe anything.

Will you take my case?

We can't say until we've heard it. We take a small number of cases so each one gets full attention, and we tell you quickly when we can't.

Can you get me money?

Some cases can end in damages and some in a change of policy or practice. We can't promise a result, and we'll say what each outcome could look like.

Do you handle criminal charges?

No. A defense lawyer does that. We'll help you find one and can work beside one when the facts overlap.

Is what I tell you private?

What you tell us in order to get legal advice is protected, once we're talking as lawyer and client. Before that, keep your first message short and leave out sensitive details.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. A relative, friend, advocate or interpreter is welcome, and you can ask us to arrange an interpreter or another kind of help.

How soon will I hear back?

A lawyer reads every request. We'll reply with a yes, a no or a question, and we'll tell you if a deadline is coming.

Still not sure it's your kind of case?

The four-question check takes about two minutes.
